Some of the charter members meeting for our 1st annual Sturgis Rally Barbecue near Sundance, WY.

In the beginning...

In April 2012, a group of interested members of the American Legion and Auxiliary from the Northern Hills met at the Millstone Restaurant in Spearfish, South Dakota to discuss plans for the start of a new Legion Riders chapter. Spearfish Post 164 sponsored the Black Hills Chapter at their monthly May meeting. Charter membership was capped at 15 and it wasn't long before the chapter exceeded that number.  As the chapter started to be more active in our community, we began escorting funerals, organizing and helping to co-sponsor poker runs, and participated in parades.

In August of 2012 during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, we hosted our first annual Chapter BBQ outside of Sundance, Wyoming.  In December we gathered as a chapter and celebrated Christmas together at the Piedmont Valley Post 311 in Piedmont, South Dakota.  Both of these events have been added to our calendar as annual events.

By the spring of 2013, the Black Hills Chapter had grown to a membership of 30 and found its identity. In 2018 the membership reached 50 with about 40 very active members.  They are recognizable with their black pants, white shirt and American Legion Riders vest throughout the Northern Black Hills.
